Starbucks remains the benchmark for coffee in France, but Columbus Café & Co continues a rise that is shaking up the coffee shop hierarchy.
Dunkin' is accelerating in the coffee and doughnut segment, while Espresso House has opened its first French coffee shop, a sign of the Swedish brand's arrival. French Coffee Shop is multiplying its openings, and Pret A Manger remains present in conversations about premium coffee. On the mass-market side, Nespresso remains associated with high-end uses, L'OR remains very strong in distribution channels, Carte Noire is betting on whole-bean coffee innovations, and Lavazza has moved forward with its launches.
The market is fragmenting between expanding coffee shops and at-home coffee brands that are innovating. Restaurants and mass retailers are now competing for the same customer, and coffee is becoming a battleground both in-store and on the shelves.
