In digital banking, the topic of Wero currently dominates the news. N26 is expanding its offering with the European payment solution for instant transfers, while bunq has become the first bank to complete the Wero rollout in four markets.
Revolut keeps attention on itself with comparisons and the Wero debate, and Trade Republic is increasing pressure in the market with an aggressive new-customer and marketing push. At the same time, Handelsblatt reports that a marketing cap is limiting N26's growth. Specialist portals regularly list C24 Bank in their neobank overviews, while ING is pushing Wero forward in e-commerce. DKB continues to score with card and banking topics, even without Wero in its offering. Deutsche Bank is appearing more often again in payments-related contexts, and Commerzbank remains listed in comparison tables as a major traditional house bank. Openbank is still present in market overviews despite its 2026 new-customer stop.
The market is thus split in two: neobanks are competing for customers through marketing and payment features, while traditional institutions are catching up with Wero and payments. Whoever leads in real-time payments is likely to determine the next round of competition.
