SEP opened the Plataforma Educación Superior 2026 with 37,503 places for young people seeking admission to university, and that announcement drew much of the recent education agenda. At the same time, UNAM went through weeks of tension. Its admissions process attracted public attention, and strikes and protests on its campuses led the institution to investigate whether outside actors were taking part in the conflicts.

The federal offering also put institutions such as the Universidad Nacional Rosario Castellanos, TecNM and UNADM on the map, as they were among those contributing the most places to the platform. IPN, for its part, bore the weight of recent conflicts that kept it in the headlines, while Tecnológico de Monterrey appeared in analyses of the education system and admission results. Adding to this picture is UVM, which is part of the debate over universities with national reach, and UAEM, cited in coverage of the university environment. ANUIES, meanwhile, remained associated with the institutional coordination that sustains the discussion on higher education.

Mexican higher education is going through a moment of double pressure: more places on paper, but also more tension within campuses. What is at stake now is whether expanding public supply can ease young people's demand without internal conflicts displacing the conversation about learning.
