Starbucks dominated the Mexican coffee conversation with its Coffee Day promotions and the launch of a collectible series, a move that sparked a battle over collectibles with Tim Hortons.
Tim Hortons fired back with its own Halloween collectibles bet, and the clash between the two brands raised the noise in the premium segment. OXXO, with andatti, brought its coffee promotion to its store network nationwide, while Caffenio used the date to reinforce its national identity. Café Simi, with low prices, is growing as an alternative to Starbucks and Tim Hortons, and Café Punta del Cielo generated heavy foot traffic thanks to its October 1 promotion. 7-Eleven, Krispy Kreme, Pickup Coffee and Costa Coffee complete a map in which coffee is sold from the convenience store to the specialty café.
The battle is no longer fought only in the cup: price, collectibles and store coverage determine who wins consumer attention.
